SERBIA TRAVEL

BLACK IN BELGRADE, SERBIA!!!

You may not believe me, but I have discovered the location of a hidden gem 98% of Americans never knew existed. An of the 2% that know of its existence, most would scream STAY CLEAR in fear of certain death; with Afro/Native Americans like myself, surely being laid to waste as they step off the plane . . . So says the vast majority of writers who never took the time to visit the beautiful country of Serbia, and its capital Belgrade.

As I gaze in to the vast beauty of merging waterways, lush green forestry, and distant high rises of New Belgrade from the vantage of the Tower Sibinjanin Janko, I rimiest on my time spent thus far, and what its like to be a man of color in Serbia.img_0391

Bruh! This floating military bridge is so sick-connects like Legos but tanks can cross it. The bridge is only complete during the summer, and connects Belgrade Centre to the historic Great War Island.

Standing near the edge of the Danube River, I can’t help but puzzle over how many fallacies I so casually fell victim to; about the people of Serbia, and what it means to be a man of color traversing through the streets of Belgrade. I found the Belgradian people to be very humble and liberal- a culture that puts respect before race or religion. As long as you are respectful of their culture, country, and people you will experience nothing but good times and good vibes.

Being a man of color in Serbia is truly a magical feeling. Yes, people will stare at you, but it’s more out of curiosity than racism. I remember siting outside one of the main shopping malls and having young kids run up to take pictures with me, you could feel how cool it was for them to have a photo with a black guy. I never felt unwelcomed to be at any of the restaurants, bars, or clubs and if you’re a single male and clean up well you will find the bulk of Serbian women to be down to earth, well educated, and very attractive.

In closing, I wanted to express the importance of being open and strong minded, to not be so easy to judge people or things that are unknown- as I find that to be the easiest way to live without living. In my next post about Belgrade I will show you the best of clubs, pubs, and dining.
